Sabah Museum Ethnobotanic Gardens Tour

An introduction to the flora and birdlife of Borneo in the 17 hectare Musuem garden setting. These are both wild and cultivated, ranging from ornamental to fruit and timber trees, from edibles like rice, herbs, & medicinal plants to poisonous ones and even the strange pitcher plant. Except on Fridays, tour will end with a visit to the Museum indoor exhibits (closed on Fridays). Birdwatchers, please bring binoculars.

Tunku Abdul Rahman Park (or TARP). A 5,000 ha Marine Park with 5 beautiful unspoilt islands only 30 minutes from KK international Airport. It lies within the world's epicentrre of coral-species diversity with over 70 genera of reefbuilding corals.

Tropical Island Explorer

Take a 20 minute boat ride to Gaya Island to explore an uninhabited rainforest. Watch for mudskippers along the boardwalk through the mangrove forest (1-1.5 hrs). Cicada shrills, birdcalls , and the occassional monkey calls lend for an exotic atmosphere. On to Manukan or Sapi island for lunch and an idyllic afternoon of sun-bathing, swimming or just lazing in the shade on a tropical isle before returning to your hotel.

TARP Island Dive/Overnight
(2 days/1 night) Depart 0830

Day 1 Boat over to Manukan island to check into air-conditioned chalets (2 rooms per chalet) before beginning your dive holiday. For non-divers, it's onwards to Gaya Island as per BIM LN3. Boat back to Manukan to be free at leisure. There, an on-site pool, restaurant, squash & tennis courts, marked trails, plus a pristine beach all add to your vacation pleasure. (Lunch/Dinner)

Day 2 After breakfast, feed the fishes swarming around the jetty while awaiting your boatride and hotel transfer. (Include Breakfast; excl. fish food)

Kinabalu Park (754 sq.km/291 sq.ml). A priceless environmental resource, and a favorite haunt for botanists, ornithologists, and other naturalists. It is home to Mt.Kinabalu (4,101 m/13,455 ft) Borneo's highest peak, and to more than half the world's genera of flowering plants, with several plants, animals & birds found nowhere else.

Kinabalu Park Headquarters

Depart on a 2hr, 90km drive across the spectacular Crocker Range to the ecologically unique environs of Mt. Kinabalu. At Park HQ (1,540m/5,000 ft), visit the Education Centre and the Botanical Garden to see orchids, rhododendrons, ferns, pitcher-plants, kerosine trees and others. Take a jungle walk near the Park HQ and learn more about the montane forest. Mid-afternoon, return to KK stopping briefly at fruitstalls & a pottery. (incl.. Lunch)

Poring Hot Spring

Drive to Kinabalu Park's Poring Hot Springs (130km). Trek through a hill dipterocarp forest rich in wild fruit trees and animal life, passing giant bamboos and giant plants with edible flowers to reach a jungle-canopy walkway 40m above ground. Then relax in indoor or outdoor tubs filled with hot/cold running mineral waters. Mid-afternoon, return to KK with brief stopovers at fruitstalls & a pottery (Lunch)

To cover more of the Park for a better appreciation of the fauna & flora, an overnight stay is recommended..

Day1 Morning itinerary follows BIM LN5. After lunch, spend the entire afternoon away from the day trippers amidest the relaxed ambience of a well marked forest trail of the Park HQ. (Lunch/Dinner)

Day 2 Early morning birdwalk before breakfast. Afterwards a short mountain trek until lunchtime. Midafternoon, regutn to KK with brief stopovers at fruitstalls & a pottery. (Breakfast/Lunch)

Rafflesia Forest Reserve
(Daytrip: 8 hours) Depart 0830
Drive up through scenic Sinsuron Pass to reach the Tambunan Rafflesia Centre (60km) in Crocker Range Park. Visit the Information Center. Walk the jungle trails in the cool mountain air (1,200m/4,000ft) to look for the largest flower in the world. Lunch at a mountainside restaurant before proceeding to the Tambunan plains and its terraced ricefields for an insight into the rural lifestyle in Sabah. Return to KK in the mid-afternoon. (Lunch).

The Tenom Intramontane Plain (250m/800+ft). Here at Lugud Sebrang, the Agricultural Research Station has Borneo's biggest collection of orchids with over 600 species and several hybrids, and a Living Crop Musuem with tropical fruits, spices and commercial crops from all over the world.

Padas Gorge Railway To Tenom

Drive 97km to Beaufort to board a quaint railcar/train. Then ascend 250m/800ft in only 32 km/20miles, along the spectacular boulderstrewn Padas Gorge, passing rainforests and hamlets, to Tenom, an interior upland town. Drive 20km/12 miles to Lugud Sebrang Agricultual Research Station to visit its Orchid Centre & the Living Crop Museum. Lunch at a coffesshop in Tenom before retracing the route back to KK. (Lunch).

Rafflesia And Tenom Orchids
(2 days/1 night) Depart 0830
For nature lovers, this tour combines elements of BIM LN10 & BIM LN11

Day 1 Drive over the Sinsuron Pass to the Tambunan Rafflesia Centre and visit the Rafflesia Exhibition and Information Centre. Go next to Tambunan or Keningau for lunch. The scenic drive continues, passing forest, vegetable farms, orchard gardens and cocoa plantations. Visit the Lugud Sebrang Agricu ltural Station. OVernight at Perkasa Hotel or similar, in Tenom, a town with a photogenic backdrop of mountains and valleys. (Lunch/Dinner)

Day 2 After breakfast, board the railcar to Beaufort via the scenic Padas Gorge. Proceed on a tour of the district. Fruit orchard and buffalo raising pastoral communities share the countryside with marshland birds and other wildlife. Return to KK in the mid-afternoon. (Breakfast/Lunch)

Danum Valley Rainforest Lodge

Day 1 Depart Kota Kinabalu for Lahad Datu by air. Transfer for breakfast and a visit to Pacific Hardwood's Agro Tourism Project. On to Teliwas Forest Recreational Area for a bird watching stop before continuing on to check into Borneo Rainforest Lodge (90km/2hrs from Lahad Datu). After lunch, go on a guided nature trail walk for 1.5-2 hrs. In the evening attend talk/video/slide presentation on wildlife/forest ecology. Overnight Rainforest Lodge. (Full board)

Day 2 Early morning, bird walk before breakfast. Visit the Danum Valley Field Centre and any current project. Visit a natural history observation trail with a 40m high tree-platform. Picnic lunch in the jungle. In the evening go on a spot-lighting drive to view some of the nocturnal animals. Overnight Lodge (FB).

Day3 Jungle trek to visit ancient Dusun coffins a few hundred years old. Return to the centre for lunch before departing to Lahad Datu and the flight back to Kota Kinabalu. (Breakfast/Lunch)
