DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL
Celebrated
on the 5th day of the fifth month of the Chinese Lunar Calendar. This festival
commemorates a great patriot and poet in China named Qu Yuan. A righteous
man who protested against the evils of corruption. He had written many
poems on his love for the country. He committed suicide by throwing himself
into the Mi Luo River rather than seeing his native land invaded by his
rivals. Boats raced to attempt to recover his body. Unsuccesfully, they
threw rice dumplings into the river to avoid water creatures eating Qu
Yuan's body. Today, the people celebrate this festival by eating rice dumplings
containing minced meat, beans and chestnuts.
