- MERDEKA SQUARE

Situated
at centre of Jalan Raja in Kuala Lumpur.
- Also
known as Dataran Merdeka. This is the 8.2 hectare
Malaysia's Merdeka Square where the Union Jack
flag was lowered and the Malaysian Flag was
raised when Malaysia declared independence from
Britain in 31st August, 1957. The flag pole is
one of the tallest in the world which stands at
100 metre high. Facing the city's landmark the
Sultan Abdul Samad Building. There is a fountain
which is more than 100 years old. Used to be a
swampy land 100 years ago. In 1884, the Selangor
Club was built with a cricket pitch. After the
independence in 1957, the square has been the
venue for National Day celebration.
