BUSES:
Overland
buses:
Overland
buses are the most important means of transport in many
parts of China especially where there is no railway line.
In most towns and settlements there are main bus stations
for overland buses. They are the cheapest means of
transport, but are also corresponding very slow. Many
overland buses have numbered seats and it is advisable to
book a ticket and seat well in advance. Modern
air-conditioning buses are frequently available in the
tourist centres.
Town
buses:
Buses in
Chinese town are always overcrowded. The fare depends on
distance and should be paid to the conductor. Buses are
usually easy to use, and timetable or town maps are
available everywhere. In Beijing there are also
mini-buses for certain routes. They carry a maximum of 16
people. They are a bit more expensive but will stop at
any point you want along the route.
BICYCLE:
Bicycle
can be hire in many Chinese towns, either in hotels or at
specail hiring shops. It is advisable to park the bicyle
at guarded parking spaces for a small fee. Parking is not
very expensive, but usually a deposit is required. China
too has bicycle thieves and there is a fine for illegal
parking.
PRIVATE
TRANSPORT:
Until recently private
car or motorcycle journeys were impossible in China, but
this has slowly begun to change. You need to investigate
the actual possibilities through the tourist office of PR
of China or other information offices. You may also join
travel agencies which organise car or motorcycle trips on
a regional basis. It is also possible to hire a car with
driver for a specific time through the travel agencies in
China or the taxi companies.
TAXIS:
In
Beijing, taxis are certainly the most comfortable form of
transport and can be hire for excursions.
RAIL:
International
Travel By Rail:
By
Trans-Siberian Railway : A journey on the Trans-Siberian
Railway from or to Beijing is no doubt one of the most
attractive possibilities of covering the huge distance
between Europe and China. However, getting all the
necessary visas and the ticket can be a complicated
business. A minimum of 3 months is required. First take a
train or plane to Moscow and the next day take a train
for Beijing at Jaroslavskji station. There are two choice
of routes to Beijing namely taking the Chinese train
which is better equipped which takes the route via Ulan
Bator through Mongolia, entering China via Erlian or the
Russian train which goes through Manchuria and takes a
day longer, entering China at Manzhouli. Both trains
leave once a week from Moscow. Preparation for the
journeys in the opposite direction from Beijing to
Western Europe is quicker and cheaper. A train leaves
bejing twice a week for Moscow. Tourists should allow 4
to 10 days for getting the necessary visas and the ticket
in Beijing. The international ticket office of CITS in
Beijing is in Chongwenmen Dajie.
From Kazakhstan : There
are twice - weekly trains between Alma-Ata in Kazakhstan
and Urumqi in Xinjiang province. For the opposite
direction, tourists may apply for visa for Kazakhastan
before arriving in China. CITS Xinjiang is one source of
tickets.
From Hong Kong to
Guangzhou : The comfortable express train from Hung Hom
station in Kowloon travel through the New Territories and
Shenzhen an area of special economic status. There are
three trains a day, and the journey takes about three
hours. There are also frequent trains to the border at Lo
Wu. From here, tourist may cross the border to Shenzhen
and take onward transport to Guangzhou.
