Yaumatei

Yaumatei, located north of Kowloon’s Canton , an area known for its large typhoon shelter where Hong Kong’s famous boat people anchor their homes. Yaumatei typhoon shelter is also famous for its infamous floating brothels - one girl sampans that don’t guarantee privacy. Just inland from the teeming waterfront is Shanghai Street, a matrimonial avenue well known for its traditional shops selling old-fashioned gold ornaments and other such items for a Chinese bride’s trousseau. At the junction of the street is Jade Market, which has hundreds of stalls selling jade ornaments. Some temples in Yaumatei are :

  • Tin Hau Temple, was built on these shores more than 100 years ago. Land reclamation has force it to move inland, but Yaumatei ‘s boat people hikeit regularly to worship sea gods, particularly Ton Hau , the protector of fisherfolk.
  • Sing Wong Temple, a temple built to honour Shing Wong, a spiritual magistrate.
  • Tei Temple and Kuan Yin Temple, which are temples to honour the Chinese gods of earth and mercy respectively.
