Aberdeen
............................................................................................................................
Aberdeen
has a character unlike any other town in the colony.
Its charm, though is questionable because this naturally
ideal typhoon anchorage is home to about 20,000 of Hong
Kong 70,000 "boat people" and their 3,000 old
junks and sampans. The term "boat people" has
two meanings. One refers to Vietnamese refugees who came
pouring into Hong Kong in the late 1970s, the other more
traditional boat people are those people who have been
living on local waters for thousands of years. At any
rate, tourists are still seduces by the colourful 30
minute ride through Aberdeen Harbour. They enjoyed the chaotic atmosphere, the
incredible collection of sea life and the dynamism of
this city upon the water. They also enjoy the Chinese
floating restaurants. Tin Hau Temple, built here in 1851 is a rather
shabby most of the year, but during Aprils Tin Hau
Festival, it is alive with ceremony and thousands of
gaily decorated boats converge on Aberdeens shores.
Its an event not to be missed. |
