Central District

Central District is a combination
of Wall Street, Washington, Fifth Avenue, the Bourse, The
City and and architectural merry-go-round. It is
dominated by banks. The three main banks being Hong Kong
Bank, StandardChartered Bank and Bank of China . For all its hard bones,
materialistic, economic, business and capitalistic
realism, there is something mystical about the Central
District. After all, a century ago nearly all of this
hard ground was under water and reclamation here has been
astonishing, making up virtually all Central. Some
attraction in the Central District are :
- Hong Kong Park,
which houses among other thing, aviaries and
botanical gardens. There is an observation
tower which is a great place to
photograph the area.
- The Landmark, which
is a five floors surround a vast 6,000
sq meter atrium with 100 shops. The fountain
in the middle has been constructed
with a cover above it to form a stage.
- St Johns
Cathedral, inaugurated in 1948, and the
colonys oldest Anglican church is tucked
away behind the Bank of China.
- Flagstaff House,
home to the Museum of Tea Ware and
is reputedly Hong Kongs oldest
surviving building. It was once the
residence of the British commanding
general, when the area was known as Victoria
Barracks.
- The City Hall, this
complex houses a concert hall and theater, a
number of offices and most important
billboards which advertise cultural
programme for the month, an necessity
for tourists searching for something
artistic.
- Pacific
Palace
on Queensway is one of Hong Kongs finest
shopping and entertainment sites. The Supreme
court is located near to it.
- Li Yuen Street East
and Li Yuen Street West, this two little street
has stalls and shops that sell clothing,
look-alike high fashion accessories and
fabrics galore. Bargainig is expected
here.
