Happy Valley
............................................................................................................................
Happy Valley,
the second living area of the European after deserting
the Western District. In 1841, shortly after Happy Valley
was settled, the colonys residents created the
greensward and edifice which has made Happy Valley world
famous. This is
the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Clubs Happy Valley
Racecourse. It was the only horse-racing oval in the
colony until few years ago. Happy Valleys second
most well known attraction is a place which looks like a
hallucinogenic vision of a Chinese Disneyland. This is Aw
Boon Haw Gardens which is a 45,000 sq km amusement park .
This zany site has terraced grottos which are profligate
with bizzarre stone sculptures and garish reliefs from
the most awesome and awful tales of Chinese mythology.
Ths sculptures say something about the Chinese mind. This
estate houses one of the finest jade collections in the
colony. |
