Southside Hong Kong
............................................................................................................................
Southside
Hong Kong is a region of rocky coasts and smooth
white beaches, little fishing villages and unhurried
markets. Neither an office building nor factory is
anywhere in sight. Of the Hong Kong s 36 gazetted
beaches, the southside of the island has 14.
- Shek O beach and
Big Waves Bay, a beautiful beach, but
with absolutely no public transport
there. The Shek O beach can be reach by public
bus and Big Wave Bay Beach is a 30 minute
walk from Shek O. The marketplace at Shek O
Village caters almost entirely to bathers.
Pass the village, there is a good 18 hole golf
course called Shek O Country Club where you
must be a member to use the facilities. The
Tai Tam Reservoir, the first reservoir erected in
Hong Kong where its earliest section is completed
in 1899 is off Shek O.
- Stanley
Village,
which
can be reach by public transport from Tai
Tam, was a thriving Chinese capital long before
the British set foot here. Tin Hau Temple here
documents that the town was founded in 1770
by a pirate, Chang Po Chai, who captured the
island. Stanley Market attract thousands of
visitors on weekends, though its open every
day. Theres shops selling fashionable
clothes, rattan, freshfood, ceramic jugs, budget
art, hardware, brass objects, Chinese products,
vases and practically everything.
From
Stanley, it leads to Repulse Bay, the "capital"
of the southside. On the way theres
the South Bay and Middle bay beaches, which
are usually less crowded than the
madness which haunts Repulse Bay Beach.
Repulse Bay Beach, now widened several times
its original size and improved, has
everything except peace and quiet. It has one of
the finest resort hotel in the East, The
Repulse Bay Beach Hotel.
From Repulse Bay
Beach, the coast road curves westward over
some of the colonys most beautiful scenery
to Deepwater Bay, Ocean Park and
Aberdeen. Deepwater Bay has some beautiful
mansions, a good 9 hole golf course, and an
exclusive country club. One of Hong Kongs
biggest tourist attractions is the Ocean
Park And the adjacent Water World.
Ocean Park opened in 1977 is
located on 170 acres of land and it is the world
largest oceanarium. The Park actually
consists of two sections, a Lowland site
with 40 acres, and a Headland site of 130 acres.
The two section are linked by a 0.9 mile
cable car bridge. In 1984, the adjacent
Water World section was opened as a
separate attraction. This is a water play park
with dozens of different activities including
water slides and a lovely beach.
