The People

Indonesia maybe a single state, but there are more than 100 distinct ethnic groups, with well over 300 major languages and countless dialects. The people of western islands, Java, Bali, Sumatra and the coastal areas of Kalimantan and Sulawesi are mostly the Malays. They are mostly slender, small boned with straight dark hair and are Muslims in religious. East from Lombok or Sulawesi, the influence of Papau New Guinea and Australia begins to show.

A purification birth rite takes place over a pig carcass; pigs are a touchstone of Irian life.


The population at theo of Maluku and Irian Jaya are people of Melanesian or Australoid, where they are dark skinned, taller and more heavily built than the Malays in the west. The Chinese are arguably the forgotten tribe in Indonesia. They immense successfully in business from small shops to huge conglomerates. Nowadays, the once clear cut differences between the people of the various islands are being erroded as the government works towards to built a national identity. However, the one thing remain constant throughout the archipelago, the sheer niceness, generosity and hospitality of all its people.

Primitive aboriginal tribes, the original settles of the archipelago, survive in remote forested areas includes the seminomadic hunter-gatherers, the Kubu and Sahkai of Sumatra and the Wana of Central Sulawesi. Proto-Malay settlers includes the Batak of Lake Toba in North Sumatra, the Torajans of South Sulawesi, and the Dayaks of Kalimantan. The Dayaks found mostly in the east and center. Many still lives in the interior in longhouses along major rivers. The Papuans of eastern Indonesia which includes the Dani of the highlands around the Baliem Valley and Asmat, master wood-cravers were discovered by the outside world only in the late 1930s. Orang Laut or Sea gypsies are found all over eastern Indonesia.
