- Sumba

Sumba has
always been one of the major backwater regions of
the archipelago. Barren throughout the long dry
season and lacking modern tourist facilities.
Known in past centuries as a source of
sandalwood. laves and horses and as a land of
cannibal tribes and rugged horsemen. Sumba today
is famous for its sculptured megalithic tomb,
tibal wargame rituals and intricate hand woven
ikat textiles. Traditional village with
elaborate megalithics tomb are
scattered throughout west Sumba.
Waingapu
is the administrative capital of the island, the
port makes a good centre for which to investigate
the range of ikat fabric available. Women dyeing
and weaving can be
found in Prauli village just outside Waingapu.
