- St
Andrew's Cathedral
The
Cathedral, designed by Colonel Ronald MacPherson,
was built using convict labour in 1862. It
replaced an older church which had twice been hit
by lightning. Worthy of note is the material used
for the interior plaster: this is 'Madras
chunam', a mixture of shell lime, egg white and
sugar, mixed with water and coconut husk and
polished to a rocky white gloss. Several services
are held each day in various languages.
