Bugis
Street was once the most interesting place to
visit in Singapore for a taste of the local
colour and vibrant nightlife. It was the haunt of
transvestites, frolicking amongst the tourist and
sailors who flocked to the sleazy street every
night for entertainment and a voyeuristic thrill.
Today, Bugis Village in New Bugis Street is a
sanitized recreation of the old street, minus the
transvestites and the rowdy sailors. It is
thronged with market stalls selling fake designer
goods, clothes, souvenirs and fruits.
