- The
eastern region of Singapore used to be considered
the rural area of the country. Lush greenery
clothed most if the landscape, dotted with Malay
villages on stilts shaded by coconut palms and
fruits trees. Today, the east coast has taken on
a different character after a major facelift
involving land reclamation and development
schemes. The villages have been replaced by
low-cost modern HDB flats, with terraces of
houses and individual villas for the more
well-heeled.Reclaimed land forms most of the East
Coast Parkway which is lined with leisure
facilities including the East Coast Recreation
Centre, the East Coast Sailing Club
and the Wet and Wild water park. At the
eastern end of the island lie Changi Airport,
the nation's ultra-modern international airport, Changi
Beach and Village and Changi Prison.
