- Sentosa
Island
-
- Promoted
as Singapore's 'Discovery Island', the
attractions here are entirely man-made,
elaborately planned by the Sentosa Development
Corporation for the 'enjoyment and recreation of
Singaporeans and tourists'.
Lying just
half a kilometre from mainland Singapore and
linked to it by a causeway, Sentosa is 3km (2
miles) in length and 1km (half a mile) wide. This
island was once called Pulau Blakang Mati, the
'Island of Death Behind', a name derived from its
savage past when Bugis pirates used to plunder
and loot the settlement, leaving dead bodies
behind.

-
- During
World War II the British used it as a military
base.It has since then been renamed Sentosa,
which means 'tranquillity' in Malay, and
transformed into a modern resort with undeniably
superb amenities. The attractions are based on
themes of nature, history and fantasy.
