- Sultan
Mosque
Arab
Street is dominated by Sultan Mosque, the focal
point of Islamic Singapore. Built in 1928 to a
design by the colonial firm of Swan and Maclaren,
who were also the architects for the Victoria
Memorial Hall, it replaced the original 1820s
mosque on this site. Its massive golden dome and
huge prayer hall make it one of Singapore's most
imposing religious buildings. During Ramadan the
streets around the mosque take on a carnival
atmosphere as hundreds of stall sell delicacies
with which Muslims break their fast each dusk.
