Climate
............................................................................................................................
Taiwans weather is subject to sudden change. There
are two distinct seasons : hot (May through October) with
an average temperatures of 35 deg Celsius and humidity of
above 75 percent. Cool (November through March) with
temperatures that do not fall below 5 deg Celsius but the
dampness can chill the bones. The most pleasant times of
the year are the brief spells of spring and fall during
April and May, and October and November respectively.
Skies are generally clear, nights are cool and days are
moderate. Nature brings an average annual rainfall of
more than 1,000 millimeters. The most feared aberrations
in Taiwans moody weather are typhoons. Chufeng as
the Chinese call them, are also known as the
"supreme winds". They swell up in the
Indonesian archipelago to the south, then sweep through
the Philippines and storm northwards toward Japan usually
via Taiwan. The season lasts from mid August until early
October. During this time, no less than a half-dozen
typhoons may cross or skirt Taiwan annually. During the hot season,
appropriate clothing for Taiwan include light and loose
cotton clothing, casual sportswear and comfortable
walking shoe. Men usually need not wear jackets or tie
during office hours. Most Chinese businessman prefer to
wear leisure suits with open collars to beat the heat.
During the cold season, be sure to bring along some
comfortable woolens to help protect you from the bone
chilling, moisture-laden air of winter in Taiwan. During
both seasons, it is advisable to bring along some sort of
rain-gear. It can burst out in thunderstorm s at anu
moments without much warning.
