Regular
scheduled domestic air service in Taiwan is provided by
the international flag-carrier China Airlines (CAL), Far
Eastern Air Transport (FAT) and 6 other domestics
airlines are serving Taiwan and its islands. Strict
security measures are enforced on all domestic flight
within Taiwan and all foreign visitors need to show their
passports prior to domestic boarding.
RAILWAY
:
The Taiwan
Railway Administration maintains an extensive railroad
network which runs around the island and connects to
major cities and towns. The Railway Administration offers
three types of services :
- Fu Hsing (FH), air-
conditioned , limited express
- Chu Kuang (CK),
first class, air-conditioned, express
- Tsu Chiang (TC),
electrical multiple units and air-conditioned
Reservations for first
class express train must be made more than 2 days prior
to departure and it applied to return trips too. Most
hotels and travel agencies will arrange advance train
reservations. Do not expect to see too much on a train
ride as most locals close the windows with curtain to get
some sleep.
TAXIS
:
There are many taxis
services in most of the towns in Taiwan. Stand on the
curb and wave your arm in the street, within moments a
taxi will glibe to a half by your feet. All taxi fares
are calculated according to the meter. Taiwan taxi meters
calculate both time and distance to determine the fare.
Small towns and villages have fixed rates for the use of
a taxi within a certain area. Beware that most of the
taxi drivers tend to drive like maniacs and most of them
speak or read very little English. Best to have your
destination written down in Chinese.
BUSES
:
A special fleet of
deluxe express buses serves Taiwans major towns and
cities. Between Taipei and Kaohsiung are frequent
scheduled buses. By departure time, almost all buses are
fully booked. Always come early and wait in a long line
for a ticket. Most hotel travel desks and local travel
agencies can make arrangement to assist you to purchase
reserved seat bus tickets. The regular bus fare in Taipei
cost about NT$10 per ride and air-conditioned bus is
slightly more.
CAR
RENTAL :
Trying to drive yourself
around the cities and towns in Taiwan is a needless risk
and can spoil your day. But if you plan an extended tour
down island or along the northern coastline, then renting
a car is a fine way to go, for you will enjoy the freedom
to stop whenever you wish. Most of the international car
rental companies are in Taiwan. They are Avis, Budget or
Hertz. Get your hotel travel desk to assist you in
renting a car.
