International Air :
Taiwan lies along one of the busiest air routes in Asia, and stopovers there may be included on any round the world or regional air tickets at no extra cost. Many international airlines currently provide regular air service to Taiwan. A lot of the international air traffic to and from Taiwan goes through the Chiang Kaishek International Airport in Taoyuan, about 45 minutes drive from the downtown of Taipei.

Domestic Air :

Regular scheduled domestic air service in Taiwan is provided by the international flag-carrier China Airlines (CAL), Far Eastern Air Transport (FAT) and 6 other domestics airlines are serving Taiwan and its islands. Strict security measures are enforced on all domestic flight within Taiwan and all foreign visitors need to show their passports prior to domestic boarding.

RAILWAY :

The Taiwan Railway Administration maintains an extensive railroad network which runs around the island and connects to major cities and towns. The Railway Administration offers three types of services :

  • Fu Hsing (FH), air- conditioned , limited express
  • Chu Kuang (CK), first class, air-conditioned, express
  • Tsu Chiang (TC), electrical multiple units and air-conditioned

Reservations for first class express train must be made more than 2 days prior to departure and it applied to return trips too. Most hotels and travel agencies will arrange advance train reservations. Do not expect to see too much on a train ride as most locals close the windows with curtain to get some sleep.

TAXIS :

There are many taxis services in most of the towns in Taiwan. Stand on the curb and wave your arm in the street, within moments a taxi will glibe to a half by your feet. All taxi fares are calculated according to the meter. Taiwan taxi meters calculate both time and distance to determine the fare. Small towns and villages have fixed rates for the use of a taxi within a certain area. Beware that most of the taxi drivers tend to drive like maniacs and most of them speak or read very little English. Best to have your destination written down in Chinese.

BUSES :

A special fleet of deluxe express buses serves Taiwan’s major towns and cities. Between Taipei and Kaohsiung are frequent scheduled buses. By departure time, almost all buses are fully booked. Always come early and wait in a long line for a ticket. Most hotel travel desks and local travel agencies can make arrangement to assist you to purchase reserved seat bus tickets. The regular bus fare in Taipei cost about NT$10 per ride and air-conditioned bus is slightly more.

CAR RENTAL :

Trying to drive yourself around the cities and towns in Taiwan is a needless risk and can spoil your day. But if you plan an extended tour down island or along the northern coastline, then renting a car is a fine way to go, for you will enjoy the freedom to stop whenever you wish. Most of the international car rental companies are in Taiwan. They are Avis, Budget or Hertz. Get your hotel travel desk to assist you in renting a car.
