In the
heart of town, this ranks as the world's tallest
Buddhist monument at 120m (393ft) high. It is
also one of Thailand's most important places of
worship, as reputedly the site where Buddhism
first took root on what is now Thai soil. The
original Mon-period chedi was badly damaged by
the Burmese in 1057 and the huge bell-shaped
monument seen today dates from the 19th century.
the impressive building is raised on a series of
terrace and surrounded by cloisters with chapels
at the four cardinal points.
