On January 1912, Dr Sun Yat-Sen was inaugurated as the first President of the newly founded Republic of China. Also on that day, China officially switched from the lunar to the Gregorian calender. This occasion is celebrated annually in Taipei with parades, dragon, and lion dances, traditional music, patriotic speeches and lots of firecrackers.
